Large wasp-like insect - Urocerus flavicornis
Lilly Lake Camp Ground, Uintah Mountain Range County, Utah, USA
July 15, 2007
Size: Approx 1 1/4 inch
Found in the campground at Lilly Lake in the Uintah Mountains of Utah, elevation 9,900 ft. Black wasp shaped body with yellow colored eyes and a yellow double band at the rear end. No noise heard when they flew (we seen five or six) and they seemed to like certain places near the base of the local pine trees. Long yellow antennae, yellow wings and legs, long black stinger-like appendage out the rear of the body (approx 1/2 to 3/4 inch). Just above the long black stinger is a yellow stinger approx 1/4th inch.

Thanks for your reply and information - greatly appreciated. I checked further using your description and was able to locate another reference which shows the same critter.

Yes.
Probably Urocerus gigas, but there is a fair amount of variability in coloration. Specimen is a female.
