Large cricket-like insect found in basement - Diestrammena japanica - Female
Flemington, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, USA
June 23, 2009
Size: 2-3 inches
Found on the interior wall of my cool, dark, unfinished basement during the day. Bricks in wall are standard-size for reference. Looks like a cricket, but seems bigger, colored differently, and perhaps a little hairy even.

Moved from Camel Crickets.

Wow-- fast, thanks.
Glad to hear they're fairly harmless. I'm also glad they don't seem to chirp like regular crickets. (Maybe there's only the one I found...)

correct
They're all wingless, so they can't chirp. They can jump like crazy though!

Camel Cricket
This is a type of camel cricket. You'll find them in basements, sheds, etc. quite often. They're pretty harmless.

(This one is a female by the way) you can tell from the ovipositor
